Obituary of Cornelio Velasco
Velasco, Cornelio “Cornball”
Saginaw, Michigan
Beloved brother, uncle, godfather and friend passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Optalis Health and Rehabilitation of St. Francis. He was 79 years old. Cornelio Huerta Velasco was born on August 13, 1945 in Calvillo, Aguascalientes, Mexico to Conrado and Antonia (Huerta) Velasco. He was employed as a custodian at St. Joseph Catholic Church for over 20 years and SVRC Industries where he retired on September 28, 2007. Cornelio was a member of St. John Paul II Parish - St. Josaphat Catholic Church and later Holy Family Catholic Church in Saginaw where he attended daily mass and served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister for many years. He was also a member of Crucillistas, Guadalupanos of St. Joseph, the Eagles Club, the G.I. Forum, and the Knights of Columbus where he was an honorary 3rd Degree.
He was a diehard Detroit Tigers fan and liked watching WWE wrestling and giving people nicknames. Cornelio also enjoyed collecting yoyos, watches, and phones. He really loved spending time with his family and friends.
Cornball is survived by his favorite sister, the only one, Anita (Mark) Mauch; one sister in-law, Olivia Velasco; nieces and nephews, Irene (Jim) LaDrig, Maria (Ken) Pimentel, Raul Velasco Jr., Yolanda Velasco, Robert J. Velasco, Raquel Gilbert, Marcos Juarez, Tere Velasquez, Vincent (Indi) Mauch, and David (Elizabeth) Mauch; great nieces and nephews; and extended family and friends, including a dear friends, Felipe and Juanita Velasquez and Tom Johnson.
Cornelio was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved siblings; Irene Velasco, Raul Velasco, Javier Velasco, and Antonio Velasco; niece, Lori Velasco; his nephew, Dean Gilbert and great niece, Sylvia (Vargas) Brown.
The family would like to thank the staff at Optalis Health and Rehabilitation of St. Francis for their loving care over the last two years, they made Cornball feel like he was at home.
FUNERAL SERVICE: A Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 28, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 1525 S. Washington Ave. Rev. Fr. Thai Nguyen will officiate. Committal service to follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
VISITATION: Family and friends will gather at Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Rd. (off State) on Sunday, October 27, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. until the vigil service at 5:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Conelio’s family is requesting that guests for the visitation wear Detroit Tigers clothing or colors to honor his love of the team.
