Harold passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday November 12, 2022 at Covenant Medical Center-Cooper at the age of 97. He was born on February 14, 1925 in Saginaw, Michigan. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He married Madeline Hover on June 5, 1948. Madeline passed away in March of 2021.

Harold is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law: Margaret (James) Moore of Saginaw Township, MI, Karen (Mark) Brauschweiger of Kettering, OH and Deborah (James) Nehil of Rimrock, AZ. Harold also leaves behind to cherish his memory, his three grandchildren: Tiffany (Richard) Roberts of Sandusky, MI, Christopher (Holly) Moore of St. Johns, MI and Angela Braunschweiger of Ellicott, MD., along with three great-grandchildren: Aiden Moore of Saginaw, MI and Christian and Mackenzie Moore of St. Johns, MI. Harold is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Harold was predeceased by two sisters and three brothers: Lydia (Fred) Ebel, Hannah (Earl) Terry, David (Amelia) Schafer, Jack (Jake) Schafer and Adam (Mary) Schafer. Harold was the son of the late George and Katherine (Kerbel) Schafer.

Harold was a charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church. He served on various committees and held various positions on the Church board. Harold graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1943 and entered into the United States Army (63rd Infantry Division) from 1943-1946 during World War II. He received two bronze battle stars (battle of Central Europe and the Rhineland) and six other medals and ribbons. Harold received honorable mention from President Truman for the good work done while serving in the military setting up democratic governments for villages and cities in Germany after World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sargent. Harold was a member of the American Legion Post #439 for many years. He was a member for over 50 years of the United Commercial Travelers of America. Harold was in the grocery business for 25 years representing the A. E. Staley Manufacturing Co. and was a member of the Grocery Association. He spent time in the real estate business where he received a Salesman of the year award in 1976 and a certificate of appreciation award for invaluable service rendered to the Valley Real Estate Board in 1980. Harold enjoyed all types of sports and watched many games on television. He also attended many of his grandchildren’s games and other events.

VISITATION: Friends are welcome to visit with the family on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2333 Hemmeter Rd., Saginaw, MI from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday, November 21, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.

FUNERAL: Harold’s Christian Funeral will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 21, 2022 at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 2110 Brockway, Saginaw, MI. Pastor Kathleen Basner will officiate. Committal prayers and military honors under the auspices of the United States Army and American Legion Post #439 will follow the funeral at Oakwood Memorial Mausoleum.

MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Memories and sympathies of Harold may be shared with the family at the funeral home, church or through his memorial website at www.DeislerFuneralHome.com
